This semester, I built a church inside my studio in the basement of 33 E. Washington St. in Chicago, Illinois. The church is 9 feet wide by 15 feet long and 13 feet tall. It is constructed of PVC pipe, paper-mâché clay, joint compound, acrylic paint, sand, rocks, and found objects. It took 4 months to complete and is only the first iteration of this church to exist. The booklet below includes a short essay on the thinking behind the project.
This church was an homage to all of the devout and faithful environment builders I have learned about this year. It is a direct reference to the unyielding curiosity, vision, and ingenuity that these builders possessed. The structure was built from the most affordable materials I could find. My fingers touched every single nook and cranny of the structure at least 10 times over, and I consider this an offering.
